The service I would offer can be targeted towards individuals, families or service organizations.  Considering the limitations of the special needs community I will focus on the parent of the special needs individual who would most likely be the one to choose services.  Most of the time it is the mother who is responsible for obtaining therapies, doctors and investigating options.
The mother is in her mid 30’s -40’s and lives in or around Tampa, Florida with 2-3 children ranging in ages from 0-18.  Depending on if she is a single mom or married, she either is a stay at home mom or has a flexible job that allows her to navigate the therapies, doctor’s appointments and routines for her special needs child that can range in severity.  If she is a single mom, the amount of time required to provide all necessities for her special needs child limits her ability to progress in her career.  She typically drives an older crossover, SUV or larger car in order to accommodate multiple members of the family in addition to any necessary medical equipment or toys to occupy the children.
As her free time is limited to when the children are in bed asleep, her hobbies might include getting her nails done occasionally or attempting to watch a movie via a streaming service.  Any TV shows watched are mostly kid related to satisfy the children or the reality TV show on Bravo.
This mother reads books, articles and researches topics that pertain to her children.  Trying any new treatments or services that could help her special needs child is her top priority along with enriching the lives of her other children.  She stresses eating well for the family and if she has time will take 30 minutes to take the dog for a walk each day to try to stay fit.  Her best skill is time management and finds time to play games, read books and enforce educational goals by repetition at home.
Some mothers will be life-long caregivers of their child with special needs and finding additional services past the age of 22 is few and far between.  At this age, the family will rely on social security or part time work for the now adult with special needs which can be limited.

What do I have in common with her?
It is not a coincidence that this avatar is me for the most part.  My daughters special needs journey is the inspiration behind the solution.  After speaking to many parents of children with special needs, the customers have the same limitations and concerns as the mom mentioned.

  1. Hey, Melissa!
I like your customer avatar. I can tell she’s in her mid-30s with her hair cut style and the style of her glasses. I’m 30 years old and this look definitely defines me. I also have two kids. You are spot on with your prototypical customer lookalike. I’m glad to know I’m going to school knowing other mothers have children they are taking care of, too! Thanks Melissa!
