Reading Reflection No. 3

1)    What was the general theme or argument of the book?
“How to Fail at Everything and Still Win Big” by Scott Adams is the book I read for this assignment.  The theme of this book is how to capitalize on failure and to have systems in place rather than focusing on specific goals.  Adams life lessons give a different outlook and stress self-care and how to take risks where you are most comfortable.  With any risk comes chance for failure which you can use to adapt and eventually succeed.

2)    How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
The book describes creating systems rather than goals which I feel goes along with this course as we are working each week on building an opportunity one step at a time.  This system process helps you make adjustments along the way, regardless of timing because you are working on each specific task at a time.

3)    If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
The exercise would involve building your own energy schedule.  Finding your energy and staying motivated to pursue the opportunity.  Break down the Activities, Space and Time needed to follow through.  List activities required as an entrepreneur and differentiate between exciting and draining as in a pros and cons list.  Detail the space you need to accomplish pursuing the opportunity and exactly what you need when you are in that space.  Designate the Time you work at your best and explain if this helps or hinders your pursuit of your opportunity.  Then summarize how you are going to work with your energy schedule to stay motivated and energetic to work through failures toward success.

4)    What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
My expectations was that this book was not as detailed or as insightful as it actually was.  I agree with the author in recognizing failures and adapting and transforming yourself.

  1. Hi Melissa, you did a great job on your post! I have never heard of the book you mentioned, “How to Fail at Everything and to Still Win Big,” by Scott Adams; however, your summary makes me very interested in reading it. I agree with you that the approach to failure that Adams discusses in his story is certainly unique given that he recommends having systems in place rather than focusing on specific goals. Overall, you did a great job on your post and thanks for the interesting review!
