Idea Napkin #2

I only had one peer comment regarding self-sufficient special needs individuals which I will address in who I am offering services to.  I have edited other sections of my previous blog to remove fluff and focus on intent of the questions.
Who you are:
For the past 25 years I have worked in financial and management positions including sitting on the board of a local organization where I have culminated skillsets to start a new business concept. If I were to start this business concept it would definitely have a fulfilling impact on my life and that of my daughter. Her special needs journey is what brought this problem to the forefront in our life. I feel strongly about the issues surrounding families that support those with disabilities and would love to include my daughter and give her something she could be a part of that is helping her and helping others.

What are you offering to customers?
I would be offering a service to individuals and families with disabilities that will provide therapies, life skill classes and extra-curricular activities in one location. This will address the unmet need for those families by reducing driving time and replacing missed opportunities with participation in activities that address the entire family. The service will also provide an outlet for those with disabilities to interact with the community.  Whether working with service organizations or as individual entrepreneurs they will be given the opportunity to sell creations they make from attending classes. Additional opportunities could be to offer summer camp classes and a cafe to provide refreshments while the families are at the facility.

Who are you offering it to?

The service will be offered to three main groups. Individuals, families, and service organizations working with disabilities in the Hillsborough County, Florida vicinity.
 • Individuals –the special needs population who are either in need of services, looking for life enrichment opportunities, expanding hobbies, or could benefit to supplement their daily activities. These individuals would be of any age, gender, or race who are either able to transport to the facility on their own or by a family member. The older special needs sector would be the target market that would work at the facility or possibly sell their creations as their own entrepreneurial efforts.
 • Families -  include anyone accompanying the disabled individual, ranging in age, race and gender. Parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins would all have the opportunity to participate or volunteer.
• Service organizations would be able to volunteer at the facility to earn hours and use the facility to encourage forming friendships and model community involvement with those with disabilities.

Why do they care?
I believe customers will care about the increased value offered to their lives and will pay me for the service to gain more free time and to give the disabled member additional skills. The service fits the needs of multiple members of the family and provides a valuable addition to the community.

What are your core competencies?
To my knowledge there is not another service that supports this niche. There are individual therapy centers and activity specific services, however there is not a mix that caters specifically to the special needs community on a daily basis. Other similar services would  be the YMCA, however it caters to the general population with limited adaptive options.

After evaluation I believe all five elements fit together. Ensuring that the marketing is focused in the proper locations to reach the target customers would be key to attracting more customers.
Feedback memo:
I received one peer comment regarding self-sufficient adult special needs individuals.  My intent was not to exclude all other special needs individuals, therefore the section has been updated to clarify the market. I meant to add additional offerings those who are older would benefit from and believe I have now clarified that concern the reviewer had.

  1. Hey Melissa, overall great post. I liked how your idea was sparked through your own personal experiences with your daughter. Your business idea is also well thought out as you go into deep detail in how you offer your idea to a variety of groups of people. I think your idea is really good and I hope you see it through. Keep up the good work!

  2. Hello Melissa,
You did a great job with your idea napkin revision. Your targeted market is now much clearer and all of your elements seem to flow together. Like I stated in my last review of your idea napkin, I think this business concept is phenomenal and has the potential to really transform a lot of people’s lives especially sense your facility would be offering vocational training to special needs individuals and that is a resource that is hard to come by.
